Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity in Health Care

Expanding access to care for patients where it previously never existed

Dr. Patel has become nationally recognized leader in understanding the factors that lead to cancer and other healthcare disparities and how to solve them. One of the largest gaps in the US when it comes to care coverage is for minority populations. Dr. Patel is focused on expanding care available to minorities in two particularly sensitive arenas - clinical trials and precision medicine.

Historically, clinical trials have been the domain of large university hospitals. Through his new initiative CCORN (Community Clinical Oncology Research Network; https://www.ccorn.net/), where he serves as founder and CEO, he is expanding clinical trials into rural and underserved communities where access to university hospitals is nonexistent. He has pioneered the introduction of clinical trials to community practices which historically lacked the necessary resources to enroll their patients into clinical trials. The patient base of these community practices is much more representative of America's diverse population versus the traditional clinical trial centers of care. (Insert story about drug trials without African American patients). By expanding clinical trial access into the community care model, Dr. Patel is bringing access to care for patients where it previously never existed. In the past year, Dr. Patel has brought 4 clinical trials into CCORN) with an additional 8 clinical trials scheduled to start in 2021. https://www.ccorn.net/

The new field of precision medicine is one of the cutting-edge techniques that promises to revolutionize cancer care. However, the current genetic database from which precision medicine originates has a notable gap; data around lower income, particularly minority, populations is so high as to negate the advantages this approach to cancer treatment can have for minority patients. Genetic diversity means that precision medicine needs to have additional focus on vulnerable patient populations to successfully affect better treatment results for minority patients. Dr. Patel is spearheading awareness of the need to include minority populations in order to improve care, and he is actively bringing awareness by writing and then create pathways to bring solutions by aligning all stakeholders together, in order to affect this change, in addition to his numerous publications on this subject.

  • He started first ever solo pilot to create a roadmap to address disparities at a local level.
  • He has published extensively on his effort as to how multiple stakeholders including local and state government as well as industry partners and labs.
  • His road map created a new not for profit No One Left Alone https://www.nooneleftalone.org/ has been getting extensive visibility.
  • Dr. Patel is also working with CMMI and other large national payers sharing his learning and how it can be replicated across different states and regions.
  • He has been interviewed by the mainstream media including NY Times, WAPO, CBS news and NPR on his ideas about dealing with Covid and cancer disparities.

Speaking

Cancer health disparities, diversity, equity and inclusiveness and mindfulness remain a commonly misunderstood and underutilized approach to advancing both personalized and precision medicine. The lack of adoption and implementation of DEI continues to wreak havoc on US health care, allowing avoidable barriers to equitable cancer care as well as health equity for all Americans. The current tectonic shift in approach to DEI and mindfulness as a source of long-term shareholder and societal value present unmet needs, knowledge gaps and opportunities to pursue.
